Hung Wan Ting

Wan Ting was a founding member and the original guitarist of Ladybug, Taiwan’s seminal underground rock band. Often dubbed ‘riot grrl’ punk and later evolving into a post rock outfit, the band has inspired and influenced much of the independent music scene in Taiwan. They were the first Taiwanese rock band to tour the USA, completing two tours between 1997 and 1998. These tours featured performances at the North By Northwest Festival in Portland and the CMJ music festival New York City.Ladybug released two albums, Ladybug in 1997 and Let the Spaceman Dance in 1998.

Wan Ting moved to Chicago in 2000, studying sound engineering at Columbia College Chicago. She formed a new band, Orange Space, and released a self-titled EP in 2001. Her first solo album, I’m Listening, followed in 2002.She returned to Taiwan in 2003, leaving Ladybug, putting out her second solo album Sedaris (named after one of her favorite authors David Sedaris), and starting up Tin Pan Alley.

2004 became her busiest year yet, seeing the debut CD of Tin Pan Alley, Entering Another Tunnel, the forming of experimental electronic band VARO and their recent release of Hardcore Beach. She also started up the 7 Inch Vinyl record label. - Keith

Smol是三人編制的樂團,於2002年組於台灣,成員目前有日籍的Chaka(gitar),Olga(bass),及一位台灣資深的鼓手老師長毛.在2004年的野台開唱成為頗受注目的優值新秀樂團,當時便是以三人的編制出現在觀眾眼前,而兩男一女的陣容加上所把玩的音樂質感,令人不由自主的想到了那個德國緩飆在台指標團-"18th dye"!沒錯,就是緩飆,Smol的骨子裡正是緩飆,所有正統緩飆該有的元素在他們手中被把玩的非常自在如意,貝斯穩穩緩漸的先舖陳出令人不想逃開的溫暖旋律和音色,而吉他便是厚實的在貝斯線上自由馳騁,時而分解和絃悠悠低鳴,時而破音低空轟炸,配上主唱憂鬱溫實的嗓音和表情(沒錯!表情!)最重要的是鼓,如果一個緩飆團少了好的鼓手真的會讓人覺得俗不可耐一點意思也沒有,而長毛的加入正是讓此團精采的重要元素,他的穩健度和力道,都是許多現場表演鼓手的學習對象,在許多歌的處理上更可看出其編曲上的深厚功力,鼓點不一定要多(less is more),但是要打到對位,要打的如沐春風,這才是一個好的緩飆鼓手阿!!
Smol的出現對一窩風rap metal抑或後搖滾的台灣樂團場景來說也許並不惹人注意,但這正是他們本身所營造出來的一種特質,低調的,樸素的,哀傷的,
輕快的,說的正是緩飆之於台北城的那些印象,不急不躁的行走自己的步調,而對於那些老生掉牙的城市疏離感,Smol正用熱烈的酥麻破音行進鼓點大力的轟炸著它們呢!!!.......>>>by Yoz(追麻雀吉他手)

Smol was formed in Taiwan in 2002 by Chaka (Drum), Olga (Bass) and Saco (Guitar/Vocal). Smol stands for Salary Man & Office Lady because we are somehow salary man & office lady for living, and we enjoy creating music after hours. Saco moved to Amsterdam in 2003 after our first performance at Spring Scream and Changao joined Smol at the same year. Therefore, current member of Smol is Chaka (Guitar/Vocal), Changmao (Drum) and Olga (Bass), plus Saco's assistance on new songs through internet.

The three Taiwanese women of Varo make loop driven and guitar heavy soundtrack music for movies that do exist. Many of the tracks take their titles, with degrees varying between facsimile and fitnesse, from cult movies. But these are no simple soundtrack covers. They are instead complete reinventions, inspired metafictions and provocative re-imaginings. We find the overweening winsomeness of "Amelie" turned into a measured and crystalline mini opera. "Memento" is viciously paced thrashing of guitar and bullet holes through a metal drum machine, with a cathartic male vocal driving it all home. "Virgin Suicide" opens with the muted probing sonority of a high-fretted bass guitar before the tension is ratcheted up by a minimal piano figure counterpointed by percusssive chimes and a pulsing synth line that owes much to John Carpenter's music. "Easy Rider" becomes reflective and thoughtful, far truer to the story than its OST ever managed. Finally, a quirky kind of punk flamenco is presented in response to Vicent Gallo's curio "Buffalo 66". The disc is like looking at the films through someone else'd eyes and being enriched rather than confused by all that may be lost in translation. (Nick Southgate)

追麻雀 / Chasing Sparrow

2003年,曾任甜梅號鼓手及由自己DIY發行專輯的佑子,在當兵期間和女友小美、電影系學生賴Q、好友莉蒂亞組成了追麻雀。剛開始他們利用短暫的休假期間練團,一直到2004年中佑子退伍,追麻雀的音樂從未間斷地進步著。

2003年10月11日追麻雀首次登台,當時即可聽出他們一貫的硬式風格。吼唱的唱腔、密實的鼓牆,不停頓的演出累積了他們更多的舞台經驗,當時簡單的bass line現在也改編得好聽而且流暢,兩把吉他的對位更是把他們的音樂創意發揮的淋漓盡致。

一個獨立樂團除了真誠的精神、認真的態度、獨特的創意之外,不斷地進步更是最難能可貴的。追麻雀給人的感動,不是煽情的和絃進行,而是他們的認真和腳踏實地。。----欣宜

In 2003, original Sugar Plum Ferry drummer Yoz formed Chasing Sparrow with his girlfriend Xiao May and friends Lai Q and Lydia. At that time, Yoz was still completing his military service. The band used his vacation time to rehearse, concentrating on refining their music and ideas.Chasing Sparrow first unleashed their hard sound on October 11, 2003.
They’ve since played regularly around Taipei, honing their skills and developing an even stronger stage presence.

Their music reflects the hard work of a band that is serious about its
craft and is sincere in spirit. – Xin Yi
